MCAA continues its "snakebitten" status as far as heavy bites on tournament days are concerned, but the May 2, 2010 MCAA Chi-Town Carp Classic™ made some headway as 10 of the 13 participants managed to catch some fish. However, the Chicago venue did yield 37 carp weighing a total of 472 pounds, 14 ounces, including four fish in the 20+ club. |

Mike Olinger won his third total weight event in a row (Two MCAA events and the Wisconsin Bankfishing event) by easily out-catching the field with 142 pounds, 11 ounces of rowing lagoon carp. Mike also placed third in the Big Fish competition with a nice 23-12. His next stop is Saginaw, Michigan, where he will be a major factor in that competition. |
| Juan Serrano caught the Big Fish of the day at 26-4 and took home not only MCAA's heaviest fish prize money, but also the big fish pot. Juan's big carp also served as a nice building block for his third place total weight finish at 56 pounds, 13 ounces. Juan's winnings will pay for his expenses at the Wisconsin Championships on June 5-6. He'll be a competitor to watch. |

Frank Rink managed second place in the total weight competion with 99 pounds. Interestingly, Frank's brother, Jim Rink, fished in an adjoining peg with the same terminal tackle and the exact same bait, but had little success. Once again, the argument about "baits making a big difference" is refuted. Sorry to disappoint the carp fishing experts and bait vendors, but luck of the peg draw and persistence in entering events give you the best chances at winning. Bait is an afterthought as long as it's somewhat palatable to the fish :-). |
| Ed Montgomery netted a 24-5 with less than an hour to go in the competition to take second in the Big Fish Derby. Ed has become the go-to guy when it comes to big fish. He won the recently concluded Chicagoland Winter Carp League big fish trophy with a 28+ and now has this silver medal fish to add to his big fish "collection." May 15 at Storey (or Saginaw) could mean big things for Ed. |
